EV Star
GreenPower Motor Company manufactures a complete line of medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles, including models with lower and high floors. Their flagship vehicle is the EV Star Cab & Chassis platform, which is able to accommodate a variety of upfits and bodies for multiple applications. The platform's design philosophy of clean sheets allows for the optimal placement of battery packs and a lower center of gravity resulting in better payload to range ratios.
The EV Star REEFERX was designed for mid-to last mile refrigerated deliveries and catering applications. The class 4 refrigerated truck's one wall structure in the interior and higher insulation levels compared to traditional trucks allow for seamless sanitation, improved temperature control and a more extended life. The EV Star REEFERX offers superior capacity for cargo and an industry leading payload to range ratio that is ideal for zero-emission goods and passenger transportation.
GreenPower has collaborated with Perrone Robotics to up-fit the EV Star with their TONY (To Navigate You) autonomous vehicle system. This will allow fleets to seamlessly transition to autonomous vehicles. The AV Star will also be capable of wireless charging at 75 kW.
We were allowed to test drive the EV9 on an unpaved highway for several hours, and found it to be easy to drive, and comfortable to drive long distances. The ride is smooth on bumps and ruts, while the EV9 is a master of suppressing the sound of traffic and wind on the highway. The car's acceleration is surprisingly quick, and it features adjustable regenerative brakes that allow "one-pedal driving" simply by taking off the accelerator.
The EV9 has a wide range and can be charged in three hours or less at home, or using any commercial charger. The driver can choose from two operating modes: eco mode and sport mode. The eco mode is a preference for the cruise control and torque, while the sport mode maximizes speed and handling. Both are a lot of fun to drive and provide an unique experience for those who have never driven an electric vehicle before.
GreenPower provides a variety of other EVs, including a multipurpose all-electric minibus called the EV Star. The EV Star is ADA-compliant and can be used for executive shuttles, microtransit or transit buses, vanpools, or paratransit vehicles.
GreenPower produces around 10 EV Star busses a month for the Jacksonville Transit Authority. The Jacksonville Transit Authority is replacing their older diesel vehicles fleet with 100 electric vehicles. With the Biden Administration looking to electrify schools across the nation, GreenPower plans on ramping up production to meet demand. Their EV Star bus is the first of its kind to be Altoona-tested and FMVSS-certified. Buy America compliant and ADA conforming. They will be eligible for federal transit grants.
